We treat people, not diseases

There is a lot of information online about Naturopathic Medicine. Some of it is quite good. Some of it, well, you can’t trust everything you read! Dr. Blake Kovner, who oversees Naturopathic Health & Wellness in Winston-Salem, is here to help set the record straight.

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing process.  The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, and empirical methods.

  • Naturopathic Physicians are educated and trained in accredited 4 year naturopathic medical colleges.
  • NDs diagnose, prevent, and treat acute and chronic illness to restore and establish optimal health by supporting the person’s inherent self-healing process.
  • Rather than just suppressing symptoms, naturopathic doctors work to identify underlying causes of illness, and develop personalized treatment plans to address them.
  • Their Therapeutic Order™ identifies the natural order in which all therapies should be applied to provide the greatest benefit with the least potential for damage.
  • While many naturopathic doctors are trained in primary care, like conventional medical doctors (MDs), some choose to specialize or focus their practices.

The Naturopathic Health and Wellness (NHW) maintains a therapeutic vision of helping people, not treating diseases. We help the people find their way to wellness, which we think of as good quality of life and not just health, which is the absence of disease. By supporting the whole person, Dr. Kovner forms a relationship with her patients that is directly conducive to improving health and wellness.

From her office and apothecary in Winston-Salem, NC, Dr. Kover practices a unique style of Naturopathic that incorporates Mind-Body Medicine, Biofeedback, Clinical Herbalism and the energetic lessons from Craniosacral Therapy,  Visceral Manipulation and Ayurveda. Then each person’s nutritional, financial, social, spiritual, emotional, structural and functional bodies are used to inform the creation of a personalized plan.

Dr. Blake offers a unique perspective having been trained in Primary Care, Family Medicine, Minor Surgery, Pharmacology and Botanical Medicine. Her experience working in neurology, neuroscience and translational medicine lends her the ability to work with other providers whether it is a more western-oriented MD or a virtual energy worker. It is vital to a patient’s health that their providers work together to insure a clear plan with everyone on the same page. Working with her is like having a quarter back on your team.

As a student of yoga for 25 years, aspects of Ayurveda and Hatha Yoga are folded into her practice and those interested in those services need only to ask for a more Vedic-informed plan and conversation.  Mindfulness, self-care and introspection are powerful interventions that are free to patients forever once they gain the skills to use these tools.

The goal of this visit, or as Dr. Blake always says: “the purpose of this exercise is to listen to your story. By looking beyond your medical history to see the narrative of you as a whole person, so I’m able to understand your unmet needs and interpret your story that has now painted a picture of you as a whole person that reveals the root cause of what’s going on.”

This can take 90 minutes to 120 minutes that fly by as you gain empowerment and hope through the therapeutic doctor-patient relationship that evolves between you and Dr. Blake, naturally.

(other language if re-wording is necessary:    Your complete health picture is unique to you and your story is a crucial part of who you are.  Every visit begins with your telling of your experience either before you came to us or since the last time we saw you.  This allows us the opportunity to listen to you, hear your needs, bear witness to your life and interpret the information in order to offer better care to you.  )

A typical plan is as follows:

What is Personalized Nutrition? ~ more than just diet and has to include lifestyle.

You are what you eat but you’re also more ~ your comprehensive personalized plan tis created tailored to fit your nutrition, metabolism, constitution, blood type, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial, social, and ecological needs.

Why are we doing this, again?  DOCERE is Latin for “Doctor as Teacher” and Dr. Blake embodies this Naturopathic Principle with clarity and enthusiasm. The better you understand, the more you understand, the better you do. Regardless of what you came in withwhat you came in for is a holistic approach informed by your narrative that makes sense to you.

As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues, all visits will be held via video chat or phone.
